Glenshee is located in the Grampian mountains between Perth and Aberdeen. It
rivals Cairngorm for area, with pistes on either
side of the main road that passes through the glen. There are some good areas
for 'boarding on both sides, with the best runs probably being Glas Maol (when
open) which is the furthest from the road, highest and steepest run and can
be an icy-mogul-covered nightmare, and Meall Odhar which is the right-most (from
the car park) run as far back as you can go on the South side of the road. It
forms Glenshee's best natural fun park area with numerous jumps, lips and hits.
Between the top of that run and the bottom of Glas Maol there's a long run with
a natural halfpipe but while it's fun for cruising, it's not vert enough for
any trickery. Above that is an area that always looks sweet for some
freeride action; it would take some trekking but it does (usually) look fabulous.
Sadly, however, it seems that if you're caught in that area, which is likely
if you're there, your lift pass will be confiscated.
The other side of the main road doesn't offer such a lot of terrain but it is varied and interesting in nature, and some of it is quite steep. If the snow is good, the run from the ridge directly behind the ticket office can be good - and it's also served by a chair rather than drag lifts. Worth a look, anyway.
One annoying thing about Glenshee, which
hopefully will be put right before long is that it's lift system
is not super snowboard-friendly. A number of the tows stop before
the crest of the hill therefore requiring much "skating"
action and that can be a bit of a bind.
