Cairngorm is generally accepted to be the largest resort
in the UK. Situated in the Central Highlands adjacent to Scotland's
premier year round activity village, Aviemore, there is abundant
accommodation and entertainment nearby. There are claimed to be
40km (25 miles) of pistes which vary in character and the
patrolled area is fairly large. The hill can be split into two
areas, Coire Cas and Coire na Ciste.
Cas is the larger and more open and generally holds snow more often, but Ciste can offer good boarding too, especially if the Ciste gully has fresh snow in it. The West Wall can be good; it's steep though and often a bit of a base wrecker with fresh snow if it's not as deep as it looks - them rocks are sharp! The Aonach run can sometimes be left with fresh snow on it when the rest of the mountain has been pisted so can offer some amusement.
The White Lady in Coire Cas is a well known run but is usually covered in moguls, but the last couple of years there has been excellent boarding to the left of the White Lady T-bar (as you face up hill); this area never used to hold snow but when it does, it's not pisted and there's plenty fun to be had cutting some tracks there. Over on the other side of the Coire Cas basin is the Fiacall tow and it's here that the half pipe and/or fun park are constructed when there's enough snow. The Coire Cas run itself is a bit of a motorway but it's often livened up by hits and jumps created by the snow fences and tow path.
If the weather's good and the snow plentiful a trek up to the
summit (from the top of the Ptarmigan T-bar) and across to the
head wall of Coire Cas is worth the effort as you cut some tracks
back down into the basin. Again, your base might suffer, though.
