"Nevis Range" is the name given to Scotland's newest
resort, located on the slopes of Aonach Mor, one of the eight
mountains in Scotland with a summit over 4000ft. It opened around
ten years ago and therefore is well equipped with modern
facilities including gondola access, a new cafeteria, and
Scotland's only 4 person continental style chairlift. Until 1998
the area serviced by lifts was basically just one basin, with one
main run, a fairly steep, wide basin called the Snowgoose. There
is a short button tow above that but the Summit run is short and
fairly flat. However the '98 season saw the debut of a new lift
system extending the area into the back corries. These used to
provide superb off piste riding on the occasions when there was
enough snow; and they continue to offer great riding,
but to more people now.
Aonach Mor is a fantastic location when the weather is clement, with
outstanding views across Ben Nevis and down over Fort William and
Loch Linnhe to the west and from the summit area a panorama over
the central Highlands. With new snow the runs are very good too,
there's plenty of opportunity to take different lines and make
the most of the open aspect of the basin. When the snow isn't so
plentiful the runs do tend to become narrow and icy limiting your
options and the position means that it can be an exposed spot
when the weather's bad. When conditions are good, though, Nevis
Range can offer an awesome day's 'boarding, particularly in the back corries.
